Yuliya (Yu Kvarta) came to Estonia in 2014 to establish a stained-glass jewelry business. However, when the full-scale invasion began in 2022, she found herself unable to continue her practice. Driven by a need to express herself and grieve for what her family experiences back home under attack, she developed a new artistic voice. She takes patterns from traditional Ukrainian arts likes pysanka Easter egg art and combines them with the material of burnt wood in order to visually represent the experience of an individual Ukrainian. These powerful representations are a reclamation and reiteration of traditional forms to reflect the contemporary reality.
